![]() Heard of the movie Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of Crystal Skulls? I'm sure you have. Two months ago it was being played at every major cinemas worldwide. I have yet to watch it though =D but here's a little info for all of you: Do you know that crystal skulls aren't a myth at all? Oh yes, they're pretty real alright. The crystal skull above is the most popular crystal skull called the Mitchell-Hedges crystal skull a.k.a. 'the skull of doom'...yikes! Crystal skulls are made of either clear or opaque Quartz, carrying from bead-sized to real life sizes. They were believed to be of Maya or Aztec origin, dating way back to the 14th to 16th century. They were also believed to have supernatural abilities; healing, mind control...and the 'skull of doom' was believed to have the power to kill. Now here's the MYTH: Recent studies regarding these magnificent crystal skulls showed that they have a more humble origin than what was believed. In 2005, an anthropologist at the Smithsonian examined several skulls and found that the cuts into the crystal unmistakably showed evidence of modern, not ancient, carving techniques. Not only were the cuts done with modern lapidary wheels, but the skulls themselves were polished with modern machinery. Nickell, an expert on crystal skulls, concludes that "none of the famous skulls appears to be pre-Columbian; in fact, all of them maybe be European forgeries." Ah well...even though these cyrstal skulls don't have supernatural powers, I still want one.... And I still think they have at least one power, that is, the power to fascinate.
